You can do all the competition prep you like, but when you step on to the stage for your first competition, you’re going to be a bundle of nerves. The deciding factor is how you handle them.
Despite being an experienced and accomplished athlete, founder and owner of WoleTraining, Wolé Adesemoye, didn’t enter his first muscle model competition until April 2015. Prior to that point he’d had a wealth of experience in other branches of physical fitness; as a runner, boxer, footballer, and perhaps most notably, as a contestant – and eventual winner – on the BBC’S LAST MAN STANDING, so he wasn’t new to pressure. However, when he took to the stage at the MIAMI PRO 2015 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, his heart was in his mouth.
‘I was so nervous,’ Wolé says. ‘I just didn’t know how the crowd would react to me. Despite hours of practising I was sure that I would just freeze and forget my routine!’ Given that Wolé was making his debut at one of the most prestigious events in the muscle modelling calendar, you could probably forgive his nerves, especially as it marked the culmination of a lifetime’s ambition.
Wolé began physical training at the age of 12; ‘That’s when I first saw an image of Arnold Schwarzenegger,’ he explains. ‘It was like a god had stepped down from heaven; I couldn’t believe that a human being could have such an incredible physique. From that point on all I wanted was to emulate Arnie!’ Looking at his body shape these days, you could say that Wolé has achieved his goal! So what drives him to go that one step further and confront his nerves, rather than just being confident that he’s reached his physical peak?
‘I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it,’ he says. ‘I was in pretty good shape; physically fit; but could I actually get on stage and compete with other muscle models from around the world? Could I even work to a set deadline, and get my physique and routine ready in time?’
The answer seems to have been a resounding ‘yes’. Wolé placed first at the Miami Pro World Championships, and went on to win his WBFF Pro card at THE WORLDS IN LAS VEGAS, also placing in two further 2015 championships. He plans to build on that success in the coming year. Wolé didn’t do it alone, however; ‘Everyone looks at muscle model’s bodies and thinks about how much work they must have put in to look that way, but it’s not just you; you need a great team behind you.
‘Trainers and nutritional experts probably go without saying, but then you need a coach to get you through the bad days when your motivation hits the floor. And as for the routines, you might not think it, but there’s an art to getting the poses right, so that you look your absolute best – you can’t pick that up on the internet, a posing coach is an essential if you want to succeed.’
Wolé has done exceptionally well. Sure; you could argue that it’s easier for him, owning his own personal training business, but the truth is that if you want anything in life, you have to work for it.
